Okay. I'm going to be without internet for the next ten days or so.

Why?

I’M GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO

TO WORK IN A FAMOUS SOUP KITCHEN

It’s with my family’s church’s youth group, which is somewhat irritating, but it feels like I’m going to basically be living Star Trek while I’m there, so I think I can bear it.

Please drop a link in my askbox to anything especially relevant to my interests happens while I’m gone. Like, if suddenly Kirk/Spock becomes CONFIRMED CANON or whatever.

So glad you liked it! The finale’s controversial in some circles but I thought it was perfect! And yes, it’s the most flawless ending ever! I hope you like Angel, and if you read the s8 comics, keep your expectations low.

I guess I can see why the finale would be controversial. There’s a lot of ramifications that come with making every potential a slayer. It puts them in more danger, but I guess the truest evil like the First will go after them anyways, whether they are potentials or full-blown slayers, so maybe not.

And there’s always the question of choice. But then, it has never really been a choice for any slayer. Having more or less of them won’t change that. And this way, they aren’t alone and can handle the great workload of a slayer together, with makes it way easier for all of them, unlike what Buffy went through at the beginning.

But regardless of all of that, the finale offered some great symmetry to the rest of the show, and I don’t see how it could have ended any other way. I think that part of the point is that all choices have consequences, but at least all of the slayers now have a choice. They don’t have to merely deal with the burden that some group of people decided for them a long, long time ago, and unlike Buffy, who was tied down to Sunnydale because she was the only one who could deal with the Hellmouth, the slayers have options. And there’s some of that Incredibles “If everyone’s special, then no one is” kind of thing, but in a more positive sense I guess?

I THINK I WILL LIKE ANGEL, THOUGH! AND I’M SURE THAT THE COMICS WILL AT LEAST HAVE SOME MEASURE OF CRACKY SHENANIGANS TO KEEP ME ENTERTAINED.

Are you done? :D What did you think of the finale? And season five’s my favorite, too!

YEP! JUST ANGEL AND THE COMICS LEFT, NOW!

I loved the finale! I thought that them making all of the potentials slayers was a brilliant idea, and it meant that the slayer no longer had to be the chosen one and doomed to be alone, which was a great way of wrapping up the show. Buffy being alone was probably the single most consistent and reoccurring conflict throughout all of the seasons, and it’s fitting that the show ended with them making it so that all of the future slayers bear their burden together.

I certainly can see where the series can go from there, but it conveyed a good sense of resolution nonetheless.

My favorite season of Buffy was still number five, I think. I liked seven a lot better than six, though.

My favorite episodes are Hush and Once More, with Feeling. There were loads more that I liked, but I don’t remember any more specific episode names. The season five finale was probably my favorite season finale, though season seven came very close.

About this Legend of Korra stuff:

youknowyouarekorrasexual:

Now, clearly, I am quite excited! And it’s awesome to see the fandom get kicked up over just a trailer and some design pics (just imagine what the internet will look like once the actual episodes air, good lord.) But I personally have to take a moment to express how mind-blowing it is that we’re looking at a series with a protagonist who

  • has dark skin
  • is a woman
  • is a woman with dark skin
  • is a muscular woman
  • is a woman who, while quite attractive, is not just attractive but also evidently a badass (plus whatever other qualities we’ll discover once we see her within a narrative)
  • and, perhaps most importantly, is not all of these things as a sidekick or member of a huge team but as the main character of a show with her name right in the title.

It’s kind of sad how any of those things are considered remarkable, but it’s also spectacular that they’re happening. It’s evidence of how awesome and it-getting Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are. In an industry (children’s television specifically, entertainment in general broadly) where so many people insist “female characters can’t lead an action story” or “general audiences can’t relate to dark-skinned characters,” Mike and Bryan have decided to say “screw that, Korra is awesome and we’re going to tell her story.”

The odds of anyone involved in the production of this show ever reading this are impossibly slim, but just in case they ever do: Thank you.

Will someone tell me the deal with Marti Noxon? I’ve seen a lot of hate for her and have no clue why (because I didn’t watch Buffy religiously). I mean, I’d like to know something since it’s a possibility that she’s writing for Blaine.

I’m not sure if I should thank you for this, or not. It makes the implications from that interview and what her writing could do to Glee all the more disheartening and infuriating.

But I tend towards knowing as much information as possible for a situation, not “Ignorance is bliss”. So, Thank you!

Oh my. I finished season 6 of Buffy literally only a week or two ago.

And Noxon had control of that season? Season six is definitely my least favorite season so far. I started disliking almost all of the characters except for Anya and Tara, and the rape-as-a-plot-device occurrences mentioned in the “Read More” above made me really uncomfortable, and not in a good-storytelling-painful-to-watch kind of way. I didn’t think the main villains of the season were particularly strong, either, and I totally called the Willow-is-the-big-bad reveal from practically episode one. The best episode in the season was, by far, “Once More, with Feeling,” and that appears to be the only one of the season that was written and directed by Joss Whedon, so Noxon can’t even get any credit for that, either.

If this woman is going to get a measure of creative control over Glee, then the prospects of season three are looking more and more bleak.

From The Age (2006)

breakfastonplutofans:

Kitten Braden, on the other hand, is all artifice. Murphy, who is in every scene as well as delivering Kitten’s breathy, self-serving narrative in voice-over, researched for the role exhaustively. He was about to represent a character whose way of life was a closed book to him. He knew that he would have to transform his every gesture to do it.

“Out of respect for that community, if you are going to portray a member of that community, you need to see what their lives are like,” he says.

“But I learned more from looking at women, to be honest, because I wanted the character to be feminine, not camp or queenie. She’s not doing it for anybody else but herself: it is a form of self-expression. Therefore, it must be organic. There isn’t an on and off. She is like that all the time.”

The transvestite impulse remains a mystery to him. But that doesn’t matter. Ultimately, he says, he doesn’t have to share any specific experience of the characters he plays.

“All I have to do is understand how the mind works and to not judge. Because everyone can understand pain and the need to feel love. That is a kind of universal need, you know. I come from a close family. To not have a family must be a terrible thing; to not feel secure and feel loved.”

But Murphy also came to understand something of the pleasure of dressing as a woman.

“It’s very nice to look pretty. No matter we tell each other we aren’t, everyone’s vain. So it’s quite nice to look nice. And you get into that - all the products, the grooming, the plucking and shaving. All that stuff becomes part of a routine and it’s not unpleasant at all.”

So, um, this person on ff.n just added one of my fics to her favorites.

…And I’m not sure that that’s a good thing?

image

Things of note are:

  • The Klaine kliss
  • “I also Love yaoi”
  • “(don’t care who is the uke or seme)”

image

I must admit, this person got me reevaluating my writing.

Of course, the fic she liked is just the product of a runaway plot bunny that got me pounding out a few thousand word mostly-crack!fic, but is this the sort of audience that my work is receiving?

Because if it is, then I think I’m bothered by that.

I don’t want to portray LGBTQ relationships in a way that attracts the Klainer-Twelves or the fangirls who objectify gay men and male/male relationships. That isn’t why I read/write (fem)slash, and it bothers me just as much as men who objectify female/female relationships. I want to portray LGBTQ relationships with the same care and with all of the gritty truths that come with love in any relationship, heterosexual or otherwise. My writing isn’t meant to be about the sex. It isn’t even meant to be about the fact that these relationships fall under the category of LGBTQ.

I guess it works when used sparingly, but for the most part… no.

I hate this whenever I read it, so I always try and just use their names when I’m writing things myself.

I think the only time it might be able to work is when those certain qualities of the characters are being emphasized in that moment. Or if one or more characters in a scene are unnamed (or they share the same name!), and their physical qualities are being used to differentiate between them.

But I don’t know, now that I’ve mentioned those examples, I’m having trouble coming up with any specific scenario in which they could be used.
