SO THIS IS IT. The Uhura/Gaila, Cumberbatch!Chapel, T’Pring/The Romulan Commander Star Trek reboot fic I’ve been working on my typewriter for… fifteen days, actually.

Basically, if I was writing the next reboot Star Trek film, something like this would probably be the plot.

This is somewhat inspired by two ficlets I wrote ages ago, one of them Uhura/Gaila and the other somewhat Cumberbatch!Chapel/Rand. I recommend reading them both beforehand for some additional context.

After Uhura found out, is took a glance and five words to end it. For matters like this, even with extenuating circumstances, there was no explosive violence from Spock. The whole thing was conducted in a very logical and civil manner, with a matched stare and those five words, meticulously articulated so to not misconstrue their meaning: “I can’t do this anymore.”

Spock didn’t understand the emotion, but he understood the sense of betrayal it conveyed.

Then it was over. Done and dusted. Spock holed himself up in his quarters and tried to meditate his horniness away while Uhura signed herself up to head a rescue mission to save his wife.

“How’d the Vulcan bitch get herself captured by a Romulan ship, anyways?” Janice asked for maybe the third time, sighing. She uncrossed and crossed her legs in the cramped space afforded by the ship’s cabin.

“We don’t know. All of our information depends on Spock’s intuition for this one,” Chapel said. Her hair looked extraordinarily beautiful today, Uhura thought. And her makeup was done up extra pretty. Uhura exercised the fleeting thought that Chapel must’ve put the extra effort into her appearance for the sake of impressing Spock, but he had not shown up to send them off, and Chapel had not seemed any worse for the wear because of it. In fact, her whole being seemed to glow radiant, filling the shuttle with a refreshing self-confidence that was so atypical of her.

Janice seemed to soak it all up. When she did speak, her eyes were only on Chapel as she awaited an answer. The two of them orbited each other like twin stars.

Uhura’s attention returned to the fourth occupant of the shuttle. Gaila lounged more than sat in her seat, her head lulled to the side, eyes cast to stare through the window at the passing stars. “Are we there yet?” she asked. She matched Janice’s sigh with a breathy one of her own, the movement lifting her breasts to strain against her uniform. Uhura watched her and remembered fucking her. In the end, that’s all it had been: fucking. There was no “making love,” or “sleeping with.” Just flesh touching flesh and the bare mechanics of sex.

Without the special drugs, Gaila with her pheromones in this state would be nigh overpowering. Only this time it was Uhura and the others popping pills and Gaila was clean, her full Orion physiology making a graceful return.

“The Romulans are going to love me,” Gaila commented.

This fic is still my preferred reboot movie had I been in charge of writing the thing. I’m rereading it right now as an inadequate form of making myself feel better after how much Into Darkness let me down.

Hm, this fic is not actually as awful as I’d remembered?

I’m contemplating uploading the thing to AO3, though some part of me thinks that it’s too noncanon to seriously publish at this point.

you have this whole universe to play around in with special effects technology and a budget that would make Gene Roddenberry cry
(look at how pretty the opening scenes on the alien planet were!! WE COULD HAVE HAD A WHOLE MOVIE THAT LOOKED LIKE THAT!! a Star Trek planet with decent special effects wHOA)
and you choose to go with rehashing a character who not only already got his own episode and a film, but who was the main villain in LITERALLY THE MOST ICONIC STAR TREK FILM
the result was a film that just seemed like a poor copy of the original that lacked none of the original’s significance
anyone who’d seen WoK could predict the main twists in the film, and everything just seemed so, idk, shallow. A shell of what had already been done.
(also, if we’re rehashing Khan, I missed my Tale of Two Cities and Moby Dick references :( creys)
no but they could have cast Benedict Cumberbatch as litERALLY ALMOST ANYONE ELSE
like Gary Mitchell would have been infinitely better, and also a really great way to kick off the five year mission as a nod to the pilot
also, R.I.P. the possibility of Cumberbatch!Chapel, you are still my pet headcanon and oh man, could you guys imagine if Abrams actually had the guts to cast a transwoman as a main cast member??
at least Chapel was mentioned again, now can she please, please appear in the next film?
there was a distinct lack of Gaila in this film :(
(and also a distinct lack of chess)
nice to see Carol Marcus being on the bridge as a piece of candy for Kirk and Bones to eye. oh, did I say nice?
I wish they’d actually done more with the whole weapons specialist thing.
or done more with pretty much her entire character, especially considering she just watched her father be violently murdered right before her eyes
like did I somehow miss the whole resolution of that?
I feel like the resolution of the most important thing to happen to her in the entire film happened entirely offstage.
also, I see the setup for a Carol/Kirk relationship in the future, and I’m really not looking forward to that.
did Abrams completely miss that Kirk and Carol did not work out as a couple in WoK??
I mean, you could argue that nu!Kirk and nu!Carol are different people and therefore it’s a different dynamic,
but CAN’T THERE BE SOME WOMEN IN THE CAST WHO AREN’T THERE TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH A MAN?
and let’s add another film to the list of films that didn’t pass the Bechdel test SIGH
if the alternate universe means that Khan is now white, can we get a main cast member that was previously white in TOS turned nonwhite in exchange?
or what if they’d genderbent someone?
GUYS REMEMBER THAT ONE GENDERBENT SCENE FROM XI THAT’S ON YOUTUBE? what if that had been the actual casting? what if Kirk and Spock and Pike had been born women in this universe?
or even if Winona had been the captain in Starfleet for Kirk to emulate and not George?
Abrams had a whole universe to play with, and all the possibilities of an alternate universe, and he went with this??
why did they even give Star Trek to Abrams when it’s entirely not the kind of franchise he wants to write?
so basically, my overall reaction:

UHURA IN THE SCENE WITH THE KLINGONS ADSFJKSG
they finally gave her something to do that’s not Spock!
like, a scene with actual dramatic tension that wasn’t a kiss!!
also, the scene where she saved Spock was gr8
There’s so much narrative potential with her language skills, it’s good to see them finally really utilizing it.

what kind of demon lives inside Chris Pine because that shade of blue eyes cannot be real
I don’t really ship Kirk/Spock in the reboot.
Wow, that’s a revelation. Some part of me is resisting the idea, because dumb sappy ~soulmates~ or smtn, but I really… don’t.
I can still appreciate the subtext, of course, but I don’t think that nu!Kirk and nu!Spock are anything close to space husbands, and I’m still not entirely convinced that they’re even friends?
Like, the dynamic I’m getting from them is purely a professional one.
Maybe this is why I experience such a block when it comes to reading/writing reboot Kirk/Spock fic?

The Alnwick Poison Garden boasts some of the world’s most dangerous plants, hence the name. Behind big black gates, the carefully curated garden contains about 100 varieties illegal narcotics including poppies, which are used to make opium, the poisonous Atropa belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade), Strychnos nux-vomica (used to make strychnine), Coca (from which cocaine is produced), hemlock (used to kill Socrates), cannabis and more.

The current Duchess of Northumberland decided to revamp the gardens when she became mistress of Alnwick Castle. The project began around 2000, but she did not begin the Poison Garden until five years later. Inspired by the garden near Padua, Italy which was once used by the Medici’s to find better ways to kill their enemies, the Duchess decided to build a garden that was filled with narcotic, poisonous and deadly plants. The initial design included some medicinal plants, but she had them removed to maintain the concept of the Poison Garden.
