OKAY SO THIS GUY.
He seemed… really familiar to me both in name and character, and I couldn’t quite figure out why at first, so I just assumed he was a clump of common tropes or something? BUT THEN I REALIZED
There is a character in Xena called Emperor Caligula, who was based off of the historical emperor of the same name, and it turns out Cartagia was also actually loosely named for and based off of Caligula (the historical one)!
SO THAT’S WHY CARTAGIA WAS SO FAMILIAR TO ME. BECAUSE HE REMINDED ME SO MUCH OF XENA!CALIGULA.
Xena!Caligula also aspired to achieve godhood, though unlike Cartagia, he actually did manage to. Though (spoiler alert) Xena convinced him to commit suicide (because only a god could kill a god) and he wasn’t assassinated like Cartagia or historical!Caligula.
That’s what we all dream about, isn’t it? Someone who looks so deeply into our soul that they’d find something worth dying for.

So I watched a few more Xena episodes with my brother today, and season six seems to have DIALED UP THE LESBIAN SUBTEXT EVEN MORE, ASJDSDHKJA, AND I AM SHIPPING LIKE BURNING
anyways, I got a brilliant idea for a fanfic.
This show loves to play with mythology (from Greek to Roman to Judeo-Christian), and it always ends up changing things from the original mythological canon. So how about Iphis and Ianthe?
How about Xena and/or Gabrielle meet Iphis, and learn of her dilemma? But instead of Isis turning Iphis into a boy so that she could be with her beloved, Xena and Gabrielle convince her out of it? Or they set Iphis and Ianthe up so that Iphis learns that Ianthe loves her anyways, despite them both being girls?
AFTER I FINISH THIS SHOW, I WILL WRITE THIS FANFIC BECAUSE OMG IT CAN BE A XENA/GABRIELLE FIC AND AN IPHIS/IANTHE FIX-IT FIC AT THE SAME TIME.
Dredging this up because I was playing around with the “finding posts by date” thing and I uncovered this.
This idea has apparently been brewing in the back of my head for more than ten months!
Yeah, it’s on my list of fanfics that I will inevitably end up writing.

I really want to write a semi-long fic for Xena that takes place in the happy years pre-season 3 and pre-Hope storyline that also doubles as a fix-it fic for Iphis/Ianthe and also uses them as a plot device to get Xena and Gabrielle together
BUT I HAVE TWO THREE OTHER WRITING PROJECTS THAT TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER ANYTHING NEW BOTH IN TERMS OF IMPORTANCE AND DEADLINES
…I think I’m just going to start this Xena fic, and if I don’t finish it like really quickly then I’ll push it aside until later, because I’ve been wanting to write a crossover between Xena and Iphis/Ianthe for a really long time.

The one thing that confuses me about all of the modern-day Xenas and Gabrielles and Joxers, though,
is what exactly does it mean when you take into consideration the mechanics of a soul?
Do Xena’s and Gabrielle’s and Joxer’s reincarnations have their souls or do their descendants? Do they both? What about Xena’s and Gabrielle’s clones? Were their souls cloned, too?
Because this show puts a huge emphasis on next lives and soulmates and such.
So can souls be duplicated? Does this change anything about the ending of the series?
Someone who is more knowledgeable than me about the entirety of Xena canon should write fic or meta about this.
One of the great things about Xena, though, is the fact that there are THREE CANON MODERN AUs
So “modern AU” fic doesn’t even have to be AU!
You get to pick from:
- Xena’s, Gabrielle’s, and Joxer’s descendants (2.10 “The Xena Scrolls”)
- Xena’s, Gabrielle’s, and Joxer’s reincarnations (4.22 “Déjà Vu All Over Again” and 6.20 “Soul Possession”)
- or Xena’s and Gabrielle’s clones (6.16 “Send in the Clones”)
And all three sets of them are alive and well in the modern world!
